Before you run off to the church you need to stop by the Harris County Clerk's office to pick up a license. Fortunately it's a painless process. Actually it can be pretty fun. Try to make a lunch date out of it! However, before you head down to one of the Harris County Clerk's several offices, you should know the following:

You must get your license at least 72 hours prior to but no more than 1 month before the date of your ceremony. You and your fiancé must have a valid id such as a driver's license, Id card issued by DPS, valid passport, or resident alien card. Finally you should bring $36.00 cash four your license. If for some reason either of you can't be there, you can fill out an "Absent Application" which is downloadable here. instructions for filling out this form can be downloaded here. It must be completed and notarized the brought with the party who will be obtaining the license.

Once you receive the license, it is valid in very county in Texas. You can be married by one of the following:

  • Licensed or ordained Christian ministers, and priests;
  • Jewish rabbis;
  • Persons who are officers of religious organizations and who are duly authorized by the organization to conduct marriage ceremonies;
